Nowa Huta - Communist Paradise

See the unique district of Cracow which was designed to be the first entirely pre-planned socialist realist city in Poland. We begin our tour in the very heart of Nowa Huta - Plac Centralny (The Central Square) which is filled with the buildings from all the periods of post-war architecture. Then, we will go to see the enormous Steelworks Complex which was the reason to construct the city of Nowa Huta as a place of permanent residence of all Steelworks’ workers. Nowa Huta was originally designed as the city without churches, but after 28 years of its existence, on May 15, 1977 the consecration of Lord’s Ark took place, mostly due to the efforts of Karol Wojtyła – then Cracow’s bishop who was later to become Pope John Paul II. You are going to visit this extraordinary church designed in shape of Noah Ark. Our guide will tell you the stories about the martial law period in the early 1980’, when many confrontations of the locals with militia forces took place and when all Poles prayed that Poland should be free from totalitarian oppression. During our tour you will not only learn about the history of communism in Poland, but you will also understand what the every-day life was like.
